About The Pirbright Institute
The Pirbright Institute is a world-leading research center dedicated to understanding, predicting, detecting, and responding to viral disease outbreaks. We focus on livestock viruses, including zoonotic pathogens, using advanced tools to study host-pathogen interactions in animals and arthropod vectors. Our research is vital for developing vaccines, diagnostics, and disease control strategies, with a strong commitment to animal welfare and the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement).
Role Overview
Join a pioneering One Health research initiative to combat respiratory viruses like influenza and coronaviruses. This project leverages the pig as a translational model due to its physiological and immunological similarities to humans. You will investigate mRNA-encoded antibodies, interferons, and innate immune stimulators delivered to the respiratory tract, aiming to block infection, reduce viral shedding, and mitigate disease severity.
Key Responsibilities
- Research Leadership:
- Analyze B and T cell responses post-influenza infection.
- Characterize antigen-specific B cells using flow cytometry.
- Clone and express influenza-specific monoclonal antibodies.
- Evaluate antibody functionality (neutralization, ELISA, HAI, ADCC, CDC, ADCP).
- Prepare virus challenge material and quantify viral loads.
- Collaboration & Supervision:
- Present findings at conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
- Mentor students and junior staff.
- Contribute to grant proposals and lab management.
- Technical Expertise:
- Utilize virological (virus propagation, microneutralisation) and immunological techniques (ELISPOT, proliferation assays).
- Develop new methodologies and protocols.
Essential Requirements
- PhD in a biosciences discipline.
- Experience in influenza virology (virus propagation, microneutralisation, HAI assays).
- Proficiency in immunology techniques (flow cytometry, ELISA, ADCC/ADCP).
- Strong communication skills for engaging with stakeholders.
- Ability to manage time and prioritize tasks under pressure.
Desirable Skills
- Experience in biocontainment protocols or large animal handling.
- Familiarity with data analysis tools (Microsoft Office, statistical software).
- Track record of interdisciplinary collaboration.
What We Offer
- Generous pension scheme and life cover.
- 30+ days annual leave (incl. public holidays) with buy/sell options.
